This design uses simple modular squares, but with the addition of a couple of interesting variations that make this project truly exciting to knit.
Using a single skein of variegated yarn and pooled knitting allows you to knit this entire piece without breaking the yarn even once. The precise use of both stockinette and reverse stockinette allow the contrast stripe to literally pop out from the stockinette stitch background.
Because this pattern is entirely dependent upon your yarn, this is a description of the process, rather than stitch-by-stitch directions. Besides creating a lovely cowl, this is a fun exercise in letting your yarn guide the knitting process. This pattern is also great practice for using Mirror Knitting (working the entire piece with RS facing you).

CHOOSING YARN
This pattern was specifically designed to be knitted using FunDipped yarn by Discovery of Stitches. I cannot guarantee that you will get the same results using another type of yarn.
You will need variegated yarn. But not just any variegated yarn. For maximum effect, it is important to have very clean color breaks. For this reason, the yarn should be dip-dyed. The proportion of each color used in the skein will determine the size of the center stripe in each modular square. My skein used approximately 70% of the main color (Color A) and 30% of the contrast color (Color B).
